Curiosity

Academia is full of unresolved problems. All ground-breaking papers / techniques have their pitfalls or boundaries. We start a research project with "what if ...?".

Scientific thinking 

We, humans, model the world: for given some observations, humans find similarities / differences that will lead to same / different consequences.  The AI modeling process includes building hypotheses / skepticism from observations and previous arguments. Always think about why it works or why it doesn’t work while reading papers and running experiments. 

Designing and running experiments

We run experiments to make observations and verify hypotheses. The experiments should be systematic and informative: among ABC, changing C to D changes XYZ to XYW. As such, writing scripts to run automated parallel experiments in the background (screen, nohup, byobu, ..) is essential. We record all control variables, conditional variables and their results. For easier assessment, we qualify and quantify the results. We mainly use PyTorch.

Diligence and perseverance

Research takes time. There is no shortcut. Quick improvisations do not build up to a complete work. Think a lot. Experiment a lot. You will experience countless [It doesn’t work] which will be valuable ingredients for research. Thus, without diligence and perseverance, a successful research will not be yours.

Collaborative attitude

We work as a team. If you can write a paper by yourself, you are already a doctor. Even doctors work as a team. Please be considerate to team members. Consideration not only includes being respectful but also being critical. Provide constructive feedback with kind words. Teach others, even your professor. Look out for help by setting up meetings.

Health

It is a must to keep physical and mental health.
